Saturday 16th October saw Aphrodite Bowls Club hold its first open day. The prime intention was to spread the word amongst the community that lawn bowls is not a closed sport but is open to everyone and for all ages - and did we get the message across! Some seventy people - Brits, Russians and Cypriots - enjoyed a superb day's entertainment where they learned the basics of the sport from the many club members who turned up for the day. After a couple of hours tuition the newcomers were organised into teams playing against each other - and boy, did they surprise us. Virtual newcomers to the game were putting up bowls that would have made experienced bowlers gnash their teeth in frustration - and so much so that the day stretched far longer than was intended. Refreshments were provided at knock down prices by the Aphrodite Club management - where else could you get pork souvla, salad, pitta bread and a pint of Keo for just €2!!!

But to be honest, all of us need a little exercise as we get older. It is very easy to sit in front of the television or computer and pretend that we are too old and tired to do anything physical - lawn bowls is the answer. An afternoon of gentle exercise in wonderful company followed by a social drink (as long as you are not driving) with friends. And that is not all!! Aphrodite Bowls Club also has an active social programme including Crib afternoons, Quiz matches, treasure hunts, and an annual Dinner Dance next month followed by a fun filled Christmas party at the club in December.

So why not take the message from the dozens of newcomers who turned up on the open day. Aphrodite Bowls Club is a founder member of Bowls Cyprus and is involved in a number of inter club tournaments and many of its members are entering for the Cyprus National Championships (we won 3 prestigious cups last season). So make your choice - sit at home and vegetate or join us to whatever extent you wish in the wonderful sport of lawn bowls on the sunny island of Cyprus.
