A
birdwatchers’ paradise
Cyprus has long been an island that attracts ornithologists
as it lies on the main migratory routes between the
continents of Europe, Africa and Asia. Because of its
diverse toponomy Cyprus has a wealth of different habitats
and more than 370 species have been recorded including
two endemic species - the Cyprus Warbler (Slyvia melanthorax)
and Cyprus Pied Wheatear ( Oenanthe cyprica) - and five
endemic subspecies.
Forty-six species live and breed
permanently in Cyprus and as many species come to breed
in Cyprus because of the favourable climatic conditions.
A stroll by the coast or one of the reservoirs will
soon reveal several species, whilst the Salt Lake at
Akrotiri is the winter home for scores of beautiful
flamingos and many other colourful migratory visitors.
